Registering for MCS with OFTEC
OFTEC offers all renewable technology installation businesses the opportunity to join its competent person scheme with the option to add Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Applicants must hold the relevant competent person scheme registration to allow for MCS registration through OFTEC.
MCS registration is a requirement for many grant-funded schemes including the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). To learn more about these schemes please click here.
Registration is awarded for one year following satisfactory completion of an evaluation of your office procedures, quality management systems and on-site technical inspection of your chosen technology. Renewal of registration and periodic inspections are then annual. To find out more about the MCS quality management system requirements please download the MCS Contractor Certification Scheme Requirements.
Please note: MCS is only currently applicable for Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
MCS requirements
For those wishing to achieve MCS registration, the MCS Competency Standard sets out the roles within an installation business of the nominee (the person who holds good working knowledge of MCS 001-1 and quality management) and the nominated technical person (technician) for a particular renewable technology. To access the MCS Competency Standard MCS 025 click here.
Installers should note that it is a condition of MCS registration that businesses dealing with domestic customers comply with a code of practice (consumer code) and therefore installers must also be a member of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) or the HIES Consumer Code.
MCS Installers are also required to hold a Quality Management System (QMS). This must meet the requirements of the relevant installation standard. For access to the MCS Standards please click here.
Alternatively please call the MCS helpdesk and ask to speak to a MCS scheme support on Tel 0333 103 8130 or email hello@mcscertified.com who will be able to give you assistance in understanding the requirements of the scheme.
